Maternity Reflexology

Maternity Reflexology Lee on Solent FarehamI offer maternity reflexology from my treatment room in Lee on the Solent, Hampshire.

Having reflexology in pregnancy can be invaluable time in which to relax and focus on yourself and your bump without any distractions or demands. Some women can find they feel anxious about the changes to their body and the upcoming birth of the baby.

Maternity Reflexology aims to optimise the physical and emotional health of pregnant women through working on specific reflex points on the feet.

Throughout pregnancy it can help reduce anxiety, calm the mind, balance the hormones, ease insomnia and provide some much needed relaxation. It can also be helpful in relieving the aches and pains of pregnancy such as fluid retention, indigestion, constipation, pelvic girdle pain, back and joint pain, and most importantly, preparing the body for childbirth

Recent trials have found that those receiving regular treatments during pregnancy tend to deliver closer to term and have shorter and less painful labours. In fact, studies have shown that receiving reflexology regularly from 32 weeks can reduce the need for induction by 70% and shorten labour to 4-6 hours with significantly less pain relief. (Please contact me for details of these research studies).

Priming for Labour

Reflexology may be very successful for encouraging labour by helping your body enter a deep state of relaxation, which can result in the onset of labour. It is thought that labour begins once the body knows it is in a safe place to do so, anxiety and stress can therefore be a hindrance to the process. The pituitary gland reflex point which produces the hormone oxytocin necessary to kick start labour is stimulated frequently during the session. It is recommended to have at least two prior sessions of reflexology in the final stages of pregnancy before this is carried out, to allow your body to adjust to the treatment, although this is not essential.

Please note I will not use these relaxation techniques until you are 40 weeks pregnant and your midwife checks are fine and up to date.

Postnatal Reflexology

Self-care is very important after the birth of your baby which can be such an overwhelming time. Reflexology can help to rebalance hormones, stimulate healing in your body, restore your energy and give you a little time away from the stresses of your new life. It may also be of help in the prevention and treatment of postnatal depression alongside medical care.

At the first appointment a confidential medical and emotional wellbeing form will be completed to ensure I have full details of your expectations of the treatment. Please allow at least one hour for the initial appointment so there is plenty of time for you to relax after the session, have a drink, discussion of the treatment and to receive aftercare advice.
